CDC Swine Flu Test Kit Incorporates Biosearch Technologies’ Black Hole Quencher® (BHQ®) Dye
Responding to a Public Health Emergency
In response to the outbreak of swine flu, or 2009 H1N1, the declaration of a public health emergency by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, and requests by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the emergency use of the Swine Influenza Virus Real-time RT-PCR Detection Panel (Swine Flu Test Kit). The CDC readily developed the Swine Flu Test Kit to detect and identify cases of the swine influenza A (H1N1) virus, and is the only FDA-authorized distributor of this molecular diagnostic test to public health and other qualified laboratories.
Diagnosing the Swine Flu - BHQ Dye to Detect Swine Influenza Strains
The Swine Flu Test Kit is a panel of dual-labeled probes and primers for use in real-time PCR to detect swine flu RNA in nasal and/or nasopharyngeal swab specimen. The CDC designed InfA and swInfA (NP gene) probe and primer sets to universally detect all swine influenza A strains as well as a swH1 (HA gene) probe and primer set to universally detect the swine H1 influenza strain. Available to the public online, the CDC posted its protocol of real-time PCR for detecting swine influenza A/H1N1 (CDC REF.#I-007-05), which lists FAM and Biosearch Technologies’ Black Hole Quencher® (BHQ®-1) dye as the official fluorophore and quencher labels for the Swine Flu Test Kit.
As the inventor of the Black Hole Quencher dyes, Biosearch Technologies is the sole manufacturer of the true dark quencher currently used for labeling probes implemented in swine flu diagnostic kits.
